Close your eyes ... And go back ...
Before the Internet or the MAC
    Before semi-automatics and crack

    Way back ... Remember?
-Hide and go seek at dusk
    -Sittin' on the porch
    -Hot bread and butter
    -Eatin' a "super dooper sandwich"
    -Red light, Green light
    -Chocolate milk
    -Lunch tickets
-Penny candy in a brown paper bag
    -Hopscotch, butterscotch, double-Dutch
    -Jacks, kickball, dodgeball
    -Mother, May I?
    -Hula Hoops
    -Sunflower Seeds
    -Jaw breakers
    -Blowpops
    -Mary Janes
    -Runnin' through the sprinkler
-The smell of the sun and lickin' salty lips
-Catching lightening bugs in a jar
-Playing sling shot and Red Rover
-When around the corner seemed far away,
and going downtown seemed like going somewhere.
    -Climbing trees
-A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers
    -Cops and Robbers
    -Cowboys and Indians
-Being tired from playin' ... Remember that?

Licking the beaters when your mother made a cake.
When there were two types of sneakers for girls and boys (Keds & PF Flyers), and the only time you wore them at school, was for "gym."
When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there.
When nobody owned a purebred dog.
When a quarter was a decent allowance, and another quarter a huge bonus.
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When girls neither dated nor kissed until late high school, if then.
When your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces.
When all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done, everyday.
When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, for free, every time. And, you didn't pay for air. And, you got trading stamps to boot!
When laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.
When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries, and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.
When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed ... and did!
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.

Dilannie, It was fun to read that and remember way back when.
I wonder if any younger people would know what Red Rover was.

    Loved the song too Willows.

(Red Rover was a game played usually in school yards at recess.
Here is an explanation of the game from Wikipedia.)

The game is played between two imaginary lines, usually around thirty feet apart. Each team lines up along one of these lines, and the game starts when the first team (usually called the "East" or "South" team, although this does not relate to the actual relative location of the teams) calls out, "Red rover, red rover, send [name of player on opposite team] right over." or "Red Rover, Red Rover, let [name of player of opposing team] come over." or "Red rover, red rover, we call [name of player on opposite team] over."

The immediate goal for the person called is to run to the other line and break the "East" team's chain (formed by the linking of hands). If the person called fails to break the chain, this player joins the "East" team. However, if the player successfully breaks the chain, this player may select either of the two "links" broken by the successful run, and take them to join the "West" team. The "West" team then calls out "Red rover" for a player on the "East" team, and play continues.

When only one player is left on a team, they also must try and break through a link. If they do not succeed, the opposing team wins. Otherwise, they are able to get a player back for their team.

Oceanna! Thanks so much for bringing back the memories of Red Rover! We'd played it so many times, but I'd forgotten how it was played! Did we need "texting"..."ipods"... and all of these ear-plugging and thumb-tapping gizmoes in those days to keep us happy? Nawwhhhhhh!

    Wuzfuz....your song says it all!

Dilannie...I think that you've touched on a great "topic"...where we can all share our nostalgic ideas! Yeahhhhh Dilannie!! :Cheerleader :Cheerleader :Cheerleader
