Today In the Garden Empty Today In the Garden

Post by islandgrl Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:29 pm

Got up to a foggy morning. Weatherman predicting highs of 32*C. It was 20*C at 6:15 a.m. Had to hurry to get some plants in the ground because later it would be too hot.

So got the plants in, 12 blue and pink blueberries. Have you ever heard of pink blueberries. Something new I guess and I just had to buy them to try. They might become big trees because the recommended planting is 8-10 feet apart. I planted them about 5 feet apart.

Also planted a hapsak/honey berry. Might be lucky if it is the pollinator that I needed.

Reaped my garlics and onions. Garlic may be more than I need but just enough onions, I think. First year in that spot and I am happy with the yield.

Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes coming along nicely except for the catapillers that got to the sprouts earlier in the season.

I am reaping zuchinni(sp. ?) and potatoes. Nothing can beat the taste of new potatoes. I also have a few purple top turnips that didn't get washed away. Beans are blossoming after a second planting. Not one plant from the first earlier planting.

Currants were superb. Many pickings and still more to go. Made some jelly and now into making concentrated juice. Have also made a conbination of currants and raspberries. Have made about 16 quarts so far. Delicious in this hot weather. 1/3 juice, 2/3 tonic water over ice. Aaaah!!!! I could do this all year.

Also doing a lot of weeding. Seems that they are the only things that thrive in this hot dry spell. Will be back out later when it is cooler to continue that chore. Trying to get it done before the grandkids come next weekend.

Enjoy your summer everyone, getting dirty is theraputic.

Wow IG your garden is doing great! Wish I could say the same here. We have had June and July with very little rain and I mean very little. Watering the garden every day is a pain but had to be done. Currently I only have tomatoes, (almost none to pick now) corn trying to make something, okra that is pitiful, and a new mound of cucumbers just blooming. Oh yes the peppers are little but the plants are staying green with the help of water.

I have never heard of pink blueberries. Are they good tasting? My blueberries did ok before the drought. The black berries were a disaster!

And I look forward to a better year next year!

Pink blueberries are new to me and I just put the plants in yesterday. Will let you know next year, if they do well.

It has been hot and dry here too and no rain for about a month. Didn't get the Tstorms last night but they are again saying we will get rain Wednesday night. Keeping fingers crossed.
