Mesh onion bags can be used as suet dispensers for birds.
Fill the bag with suet, hang the bag from a tree and watch the birds
    grab a bite to eat.

(We find many of the birds we get at our feeders go for the black sunflower
seeds. They can be expensive, depending on where they are bought, but we
find the ones sold at dollar stores get eaten up just as quickly.)

I have not put up a feeder since I moved because hubby says they encourage mice to come around. Since arriving at my daughters and seeing the variety she gets, including cardinals, I now want to put one up when I get home. She uses the songbird mix is expensive. I will visit the farm supply store to see if a can buy a similar mix of quality seeds. I find that most mixed seeds have too much cracked corn and millet which can be messy when not eaten. I like mixes with nut meats, black oil sunflower seeds.

I winter feed only, not a lot for the same reason as IG says in that too much leftover at night encourages mice or worse. I put out a feeder on the cement portion of the yard so that any stray falling seed makes it easy for the ground feeders to find.

We get cardinals, jays, mourning doves and juncos mostly. Of course the sparrows and if I throw out bread a flock of starlings. We have a russian olive tree in the front yard which is almost stripped now of berries.

My one cat sits by the hour watching through the window, whiskers twitching, tail flashing. The other cat knows there is no use anticipating something he just ain't gonna get, so he just ignores.
