The famous poet was born on this day in Maine.


Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was an American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy and was one of the five Fireside Poets.

Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, then part of Massachusetts, and studied at Bowdoin College. After spending time in Europe he became a professor at Bowdoin and, later, at Harvard College. His first major poetry collections were Voices of the Night (1839) and Ballads and Other Poems (1841). Longfellow retired from teaching in 1854 to focus on his writing, living the remainder of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a former headquarters of George Washington. His first wife, Mary Potter, died in 1835 after a miscarriage. His second wife, Frances Appleton, died in 1861 after sustaining burns from her dress catching fire. After her death, Longfellow had difficulty writing poetry for a time and focused on his translation. He died in 1882.

Samuel de Champlain sets sail from France.

1603 March 15: The leader of the overall expedition was a merchant named Pontgrave. Samuel de Champlain set sail for Quebec from Honfleur, France - there were two ships on the voyage.

In 1604 Champlain returned to Nova Scotia
to found a colony in what is now Port Royal.

There is an infamous Port Royal in Jamaica also. It was infamous because it was ruled by pirates. Very little is left of it because it sunk after a strong earthquake. Not sure of the dates so I am omitting that.

That is interesting Islandgrl.

(We have Oak Island in NS and one story about it is that pirates buried money or jewels there centuries ago, but nothing has ever been found.)


Oak Island is a 140-acre (57 ha) island in Lunenburg County on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. The tree-covered island is one of about 360 small islands in Mahone Bay and rises to a maximum of 35 feet (11 m) above sea level. Located 200 metres from shore and connected to the mainland by a modern causeway, the island is privately owned, and advance permission is required for any visitation.

Oak Island is noted as the location of the so-called Money Pit and the site of over 200 years of treasure hunting.[1] Repeated excavations have reported layers of apparently man-made artifacts as deep as 31 meters, but ended in collapsed excavations and flooding. Critics argue that there is no treasure and that the pit is a natural phenomenon, likely a sinkhole

That is a very intriguing story about Oak Island. I have watched severall shows of people trying to recover treasure but quit because of the danger of cave-ins.

I watch show or big rigs recovering treasure from the oceans and that is very interesting also. I like History.
