Re: Writing
Email sent to an old friend today re our 60th Wedding Anniversary
If we live to see it, December 22nd will be our 60th
anniversary. I was in the navy and came home on a short Christmas leave to get married.
Didn’t get off to a good start.
My train from Halifax to Montreal was delayed by a heavy snowstorm and and I didn’t connect with the regular afternoon train from Montreal to Toronto that would have got me into TO at about 10PM on Friday evening, the night before our wedding. You can imagine the panic that caused in she and our families In the event,, they learned that a Special Night Train was scheduled that got me into Toronto 8AM on the morning of our wedding. It was held at 7PM in a large old Anglican Church not far from where she lived.
Next fiasco occurred when my older brother, who was my best man, and I got to the church . The sexton told us to wait in a small room behind the altar until all the guests had arrived and we heard the Wedding March begin. The door was closed and we did not hear it. He rushed in and told us that my betrothed had started up the aisle and had to stop until we got to the appointed place.
No hitches occurred during the ceremony except that I was told that I had held our kiss a little too long. Hadn’t seen her in 8 months.
After the lovely reception her parents had arranged was over she , her sister bridesmaids, and cute little flower girl who lived across the road from them, retired to an upstairs room during which, she tossed her bouquet to some eager single female friends, and she changed into her “going away suit”
My father had rented a car for us and the next near disaster occurred when her brothers chased us honking along Bloor St. W. It had snowed heavily during the day and we were driving behind a streetcar and slid on the slippery tracks. Almost crashed into the rear of it.
To shorten the story, we arrived safely in Niagara Falls and got lodged in a small motel. Next time we looked at the Falls.
I had to leave her on New Years Eve . My brother, who wasn’t married at the time, and bride accompanied me to the Union Station.
Had to commiserate with a bottle of whiskey I shared with the Sleeping car Porter who was about as sad as me because he had to work on New Years Eve.
My wife has often chided me that I had nothing to do with the wedding arrangements. All I had to do was “BE THERE” and I almost wasn’t.

HUH! You say that you are 30 IG. Of course all women lie about their age and weight.
