    There are plenty of words that mean nothing on food packages: new and improved, better flavor, artisan. But just like clothes and music, food packaging has fads. Putting astronaut or space on a package was a hot ticket in 1962, but would be a dud today. Here's a little tour through the biggest-hit packaging buzzwords from the past five decades, found on foods that gained in popularity during these eras.

    One of the most entertaining ads that gave me a laugh was Accent. Remember them slapping the chicken and telling it to "Wake up"?

    I suspect that food packaging is STILL fooling some people who seem to be taken in by the outward "appearance" of a product rather than what is actually written on the label! I've recently purchased a small credit card sized magnifying glass that I keep in my purse because I want to be able to read food labels clearly so I can make an informed decision based on the ingredient listing.... especially important if you're dealing with food sensititives/allergies or are on a calorie restricted diet. Nice packaging may initially attract a buyer but IMHO the label is the key so we need to do our homework.

    Dilannie, very good idea to have a small magnifying glass in your purse when shopping. I must look for one.
    I have to squint to see the ingredients and sometimes they are
    just too small.
    Sulphites can give me a very bad headache and make me sick,
    so I try to avoid that additive like the plague! Also MSG.
    There are just too many additives in packaged foods now.
